Niñas Escarlata

One World – Opening Film

A teacher preaches abstinence to her students as a means of preventing abortion. In the Dominican Republic, this is punishable by lengthy prison sentences without exception. Although female politicians are discussing opening up the Penal Code of 1884, a proposed bill ultimately fails. In Niñas Escarlata, survivors who often become pregnant as teenagers after being raped within their own families recount their traumatic experiences in voice-over. The filmmaker compellingly shows how women strive for the self-determination to which they are entitled under the constitution. A masterfully told film that addresses this sensitive subject with great urgency.
