Keren Kraizer left Israel at the age of 20 to study dance in Belgium, but also to escape her homeland and its divisions. A visit to her family in early 2023 sparks an unexpected desire to rebuild her connection with her roots – a distinctly ambivalent process that she seeks to capture in a video diary. The words and images that emerge, drawn from everyday life with a wonderfully intuitive sense of structure and editing, inevitably oscillate between the personal and the political, reflecting the current state of the nation: a conversation with her mother about the lack of a vision for lasting peace; footage of a man being shouted at for waving a Palestinian flag during protests against Netanyahu’s attacks on the rule of law; the heartbreaking English-language poem sent to her by a friend she met on a trip to the West Bank, who does not want to be filmed; the nighttime conversation with her new boyfriend during a walk through Jerusalem about all the tensions simmering beneath the surface – a conversation that will prove to be darkly prophetic. For Kraizer’s diary is quickly overtaken by events beyond her control, and ambivalence gives way to fear and disbelief. What now? How can the suffering of people be brought to an end? “We are the ones walking barefoot on the scraps of hope. We did not create the war, but we shaped poems from its ruins.” (James Lattimer)
